Negros Power has a long way to go. About 8 months into operation, the Negros Electric and Power Corporation (NEPC) has completed a major upgrade to its Panaogao and Sum-ag substations. This undertaking marks a significant milestone in its ongoing efforts to modernize and strengthen the Central Negros Power Grid insfrastructure.

Working on the Central Negros Power Grid

In Silay City, Negros Occidental, the Panaogao Substation underwent a comprehensive maintenance program on Saturday, March 22nd, from 6:00 AM to 3:30 PM, temporarily affecting 10,221 consumers.

Linemen work on the Panaogao Substation in Silay.

On the following day, Sunday, March 23rd, the Sum-ag Substation received similar upgrades, with work occurring from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM.

These essential upgrades included:

  • protection system upgrades
  • installing new insulators
  • replacing disconnect switches and current transformers
  • correcting hotspots
  • adding “tree wires”

These measures are designed to reinforce power stability and reduce potential disruptions caused by environmental factors such as weather events or vegetation growth. As we have reported earlier, about 90% of brownouts are caused by tree branches touching power lines

“These two days of preventive maintenance have allowed us to make significant improvements and address potential issues,” said Engr. Oscar Duca, Area Office Assistant Manager of Negros Power. “These upgrades are crucial for ensuring a stronger and more reliable power system for our consumers.”

Part of the 5-Year Development Plan

As Negros Power continually reminds its consumers, the development does not happen by magic. Last year, it laid out its 5-year development plan to fix and even modernize the distribution utility in Central Negros.

The rehabilitation efforts at the Panaogao and Sum-ag substations are part of Negros Power’s broader five-year rehabilitation and modernization program for the Central Negros power grid.

This comprehensive plan focuses on replacing outdated equipment, upgrading critical infrastructure, and strengthening overall service reliability.

By investing in these improvements, Negros Power is committed to delivering a more robust and efficient power system for the entire region. These upgrades demonstrate the company’s dedication to providing a more reliable and resilient power system for Central Negros, ensuring that consumers can enjoy a consistent and uninterrupted power supply. While nothing is immediate for work in the power industry, we are hopeful because the new DU is determined about improving customer experience.

“We are committed to powering progress and driving a brighter future for Central Negros,” said Engr. Bailey Del Castillo, Chief Operations Officer of Negros Power. “Our investments in infrastructure modernization and our commitment to sustainable practices are essential for ensuring a reliable and efficient power supply for future demands.”
