A Bacolod heart specialist for kids, through Bacolod Kolasas, saved the lives of two young children with congenital heart diseases.
The Scholasticans of Bacolod, also endearingly called as the Bacolod Kolasas, are active in their social responsibility. The St. Scholastica’s Bacolod Alumnae Foundation, Inc. (SSBAFI) has been known to help indigents with medical and surgical cases.
It is non-profit alumni-based foundation inspired by the Benedictine Spirit of Ora et Labora. They are committed to uplifting the poor and marginalized sectors of Negros Occidental through socio-economic programs.
Bacolod Heart Specialist for Kids
Dr. Judah Gozar is a Pediatric Interventional Cardiologist in Bacolod City who shares the same mission. He closes heart defects of some indigent patients with the help of foundations.
He laments, “It’s sad to see patients following up in your clinic almost quarterly, knowing you can do something. But they are limited by funds.” That is why, he does everything that he can to help, especially connecting patients and finding funding. “I was given a gift and I’m here to share it. But I cannot do this alone.”
Then Dr. Gozar received good news from Mrs. Jean Trebol. The SSBAFI and St. Scholastica Silver Jubilarian Batch 1994 are willing to help indigent kids. They are specifically interested in kids with congenital heart disease.

Two Kids With Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA)
The two-year-old Kisha Lopez from Calatrava and six-year-old Mylez Quiatchon from Talisay City are the patients. They both have the same condition — a congenital heart disease called Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA).
PDA is an abnormal duct that creates a recirculating blood flow to the lungs and heart. This heart condition causes heart enlargement, difficulty in breathing, poor weight gain, and excessive sweating. Moreover, the patient is also at risk to recurrent respiratory infections and other health problems.
The thorough examination and screening was done in Bacolod. It was conducted by Bacolod pediatric cardiologist Dr. Maria Consuelo Dolores Tumaneng. Afterwards, they were referred to Dr. Gozar for the procedure.
Procedure: Transcatheter Closure of PDA
On August 5, 2019, the procedure was done with the help of the Dr. Mylah Alfeche. She is also a Pediatric Interventional Cardiologist in Iloilo City. The procedure is called Transcatheter closure of PDA and was performed at The Medical City Iloilo.
In these cases, there is no need for an open-heart surgery. Only catheters and a device are used to plug the defect. Additionally, the procedure is fast and the patient will undergo a quick recovery time.
Doctors Gozar and Alfeche waived their professional fees to have these procedures done on the two kids.
Special thanks are due to the SSA Silver Jubilarian Batch 1994 for sponsoring the device used to plug the defect. SSBAFI, Negros Occidental Vice Governor Jeffrey Ferrer, anonymous donors, and Philhealth shouldered the hospital bill.
A New Life for the Two Kids
Just a few days after the procedure, the parents saw dramatic changes in their children’s condition.
Additionally, the change had a big impact in their family dynamics and finances. The procedure relieved them from the financial burden of the procedure. The maintenance medications have also been eradicated. Most of all, the parents were relieved of taking care of the children 24/7. They used to worry so much because of their children’s heart condition.
One parent said, “The foundation did not only save my daughter’s life. They also saved our carabao from being sold.”

A parent
Saving a life, coupled with the smiles and gratitude of the parents, gives the doctors’ professions a new meaning. This fuels them further to help more children in the future.

Super na touch ako while reading this. Ang galing ng mga doctor and also their patients are very strong. Pediatric cardiology has gone a long way. The technology is very impressive! NO need for open heart surgeries in most cases.
